Living in Hampshire
We're probably best known for our rural beauty, and it's not hard to see why. More than 90% of our county is covered by stunning, rolling countryside. However, most people choose to live in vibrant market towns and urban areas such as Aldershot, Andover, Basingstoke, Eastleigh, Fareham, Farnborough, Gosport, Havant and Winchester. This means that the county can offer an unrivalled diversity of properties to choose from - everything from seafront apartments and thatched cottages to new executive developments and character family homes in market towns like Alresford or Romsey. Of course, you might even choose to live in the coastal cities of Southampton or Portsmouth, steeped in nautical history.
If you're ever in the mood for a walk, Hampshire has a wealth of countryside to explore from the New Forest through to the South Downs and along our beautiful coastline. Not that you'll have to walk everywhere, of course. We're surprisingly well connected, so wherever you live, you can rely on excellent transport links to London, the South West and even further afield.
If you come to Hampshire, it won't take you long to see that we're a large, dynamic and successful authority. But that's not to say that we don't face challenges. We have to deliver services to a population of 1.26 million residents in over 500,000 households. And the overall appearance of affluence can mask real problems of relative deprivation and vulnerable communities in our county.
